WWT Washington, which stands for the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust in Washington, has plenty to attract visitors. There’s a chance to learn all about the wetland birds that live here, from herons and swans, to flamingos. There’s also a discovery centre and kids adventure play area. Alternatively, you can take a rest at the picturesque Waterside Café.
The Museum & Winter Gardens combine two excellent attractions in one. Firstly take a leisurely stroll around the Winter Gardens, where you’ll find a stunning glass hot house that is home to a wealth of exotic plants, trees and flowers. In contrast the museum area gives a wonderful insight into Sunderland’s past.
Contemporary art lovers should head for the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art situated in the City Library and Art Centre. Not only is the amazing space home it an excellent permanent collection but it also plays host to changing exhibitions throughout the year, so it’s well worth finding out what’s on during your stay.
The Fulwell Windmill is one of the few surviving windmills that serve to remind us of the area’s industrial heritage. The visitor’s centre informs guests of the structure’s 200 year history, as do the guided tours that are available.
Sunderland has long had a history for glass making, so it is perhaps not surprising to learn that it is home to the National Glass Centre. The centre provides detailed information on glass making and excellent examples of the diversity of this great material, but the highlight of the tour has to be the Glass Studio where you can what how the experts make it before having a go yourself.
